It’s hard to criticize goodwill, but it's even harder to ignore the structural violence glossed over. While we're celebrating isolated acts of human decency among the dispossessed, perhaps we should ask why millions are dispossessed in the first place?
Newsweek's narrative focuses on the symptom—the existence of a 'homeless community'—rather than the disease: decades of policy choices. These 'communities' exist because of housing crises, mental health care defunding, and a safety net ruptured by politicians who prioritize endless wars and corporate handouts. It’s almost as if some media outlets prefer a narrative of individual heroism over the
inconvenient truth of systemic neglect. One might wonder if the same compassion would be highlighted if said 'community' was advocating for their own housing rights, rather than merely playing the role of benevolent backdrop to a feel-good human interest piece.
