Newsweek highlights the Department of Homeland Security's 'major reversal' in green card policy, framing it as a move to reduce bureaucracy. They detail how forms might be merged and fees adjusted. However, this administrative reshuffling conveniently sidesteps the larger, structural issues in U.S. immigration policy. This 'efficiency' often translates to tightening avenues for legal migration
while the border-industrial complex profits from constant 'crisis' narratives. Instead of addressing the root causes of migration or expanding humanitarian pathways, we get procedural 'updates.' The changes do little to challenge the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, which dramatically increased deportations and punitive measures. It's a classic D.C. maneuver:
rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic and call it 'innovation,' rather than questioning why we're hitting icebergs in the first place.
