Newsweek's piece on Renee Good's Christian missionary work paints a picture of pure, selfless 'caring.' What the article neglects, however, is the long, documented history of Christian missionary efforts in indigenous communities serving as a vanguard for cultural destruction and colonial land grabs. From residential schools to forced religious conversions, these 'caring' missions often paved the
way for the systematic dismantling of native cultures and spiritual practices. One might wonder if 'caring' is simply the softer word for 'conquest' when seen through the lens of historical context. The media often sanitizes narratives around humanitarianism, especially concerning indigenous populations. This framing allows for the continued romanticization of interventions that, for centuries,
have stripped communities of their autonomy. It seems the 'caring' label is easily applied when the historical bill isn't being presented.
