Newsom Demands Probe of… Young Republicans, Not War Profiteers
Governor Newsom, ever vigilant, has dispatched a letter to Congress demanding a probe into some salty (and likely cringe-worthy) texts exchanged by Young Republicans. One might wonder if this intense focus on private message groups is a strategic distraction from, say, the billions in taxpayer dollars funneled to conflict zones, or the verifiable influence of lobbying groups on US foreign policy.
For instance, in 2022, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent over $3.5 million on lobbying and its PAC contributed over $17 million to federal candidates, according to OpenSecrets.org. That’s real money influencing real votes, not just some college kids’ regrettable emojis. It appears easier to grandstand against uncouth youth than to challenge the entrenched power structures
that actually warp policy. How exactly do texts from a Young Republicans group threaten national security compared to, say, elected officials voting for endless wars after receiving hefty campaign donations from defense contractors or foreign interest groups? The silence on the latter is, as always, deafening. One might even call it… bipartisan.
