New Arab Discovers Syria Has 'New Authorities' - Again
The New Arab's recent hand-wringing over Homs, painting it as a 'stability test' for Syria's 'new authorities,' conveniently omits decades of context. These 'new authorities' are, in fact, the same Syrian government, now consolidating after a brutal war inflamed by external actors. The West and its allies spent years funding, arming, and cheerleading various opposition groups—some of whom,
including foreign jihadists, controlled parts of Homs for years. To then act surprised that stability is a 'challenge' is a rhetorical feat. One might wonder if the 'stability test' narrative applies universally. Do Washington-aligned nations get a free pass, while any nation defying the US hegemony must always prove its worth? It appears that for certain outlets, 'failure' is the only acceptable
outcome when the inconveniently persistent Syrian government is at the wheel. The real test is media honesty, and that's a consistent failed grade.
