Netanyahu Resumes Ceasefire Talks, Still Bombing Gaza
France 24 reports that Israel and Hamas are back at the table in Egypt for 'ceasefire talks.' How very encouraging, right? Except, these 'talks' are unfolding while Netanyahu’s government intensifies its assault on Rafah, a declared 'safe zone' where over a million displaced Palestinians are trapped. One might wonder if 'negotiating' while simultaneously bombing the negotiating party's civilians
is standard diplomatic practice, or just another form of psychological warfare. This isn't Netanyahu's first rodeo. He’s previously dismissed ceasefires as 'temporary pauses' when it suited his political ends, dating back to 2014, and earlier. Each 'resumption' of dialogue seems inversely proportional to the actual de-escalation of violence. It appears the international community is content to
watch this macabre tango, celebrating the mere act of talking while the devastation continues unabated. Perhaps 'ceasefire talks' has become another euphemism for 'more time for Israel to achieve its objectives.'
