What the headline doesn't mention is that this particular directive echoes nearly every preceding escalation in Gaza since at least 2008, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2021. Each time framed as a necessary, immediate response, never as part of an ongoing, systemic siege and
occupation. We might ask, how many times must Israeli leaders "order" such actions before the international community recognizes it as policy, not an isolated incident? The constant cycle of 'order, attack, deplore, rebuild, repeat' is not a bug; it's the feature of a system designed to maintain control over an open-air prison, funded in part by billions in U.S. aid. (The U.S. provides
approximately $3.8 billion in military aid to Israel annually, per the Congressional Research Service.) The predictable outrage from some U.S. politicians seems to directly correlate with the proximity of an election or a particularly egregious bombing, rather than a genuine shift in policy.
