Netanyahu Demands Demilitarization, Ignores His Own Occupation
Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly demanding the demilitarization of southern Syria as part of a potential US-brokered security pact ( The New Arab ). This isn't the first time an Israeli leader has cried 'security threat' while holding onto occupied territory. Remember the Golan Heights, seized in 1967 and annexed in 1981, a move condemned internationally? (UN Security Council Resolution
497, 1981). And let's not forget the endless cycle of demanding demilitarization from others while maintaining one of the world's most robust and US-funded militaries. The sheer chutzpah of demanding demilitarization from a sovereign nation, whose land is actively occupied by the demanding party, is breathtaking. Perhaps Israel should start with its own demilitarization of the Syrian territories
it still occupies before dictating terms to Damascus. Or is it only 'security' when it benefits one side, and 'aggression' for the other?
