Migrants Freeze to Death While West Builds Walls, Not Bridges
Mainstream media will dutifully report the numbers: nine lives extinguished by cold and closed borders (The New Arab, December 14, 2025). What they often elide is the geopolitical framing that makes such tragedies routine. While millions are spent fortifying European borders against the desperate, humanitarian corridors remain a moral abstraction. The economic and political instabilities, often
fueled by Western intervention and extraction, that push these individuals from their homes receive less airtime than whether a country can handle 'the influx.' One might wonder if the same collective 'humanitarian' handwringing accompanies these deaths as it does other global crises. Or perhaps, for those escaping the bitter fruits of neocolonial policies and searching for basic dignity, their
suffering is simply the 'cost of doing business' in a world engineered for some more than others.
