Miami Drowns, U.S. Still Subsidizes Other People's Borders
While Miami-Dade residents pack up (Newsweek), facing rising tides and stagnant federal solutions, one might wonder about Washington’s sense of urgency on domestic issues. For instance, in 2023 alone, the U.S. committed billions in military aid abroad. The same politicians who lament climate migration here seem eager to fund others' borders while ours erode. We can't seem to find emergency funding
for American cities sinking into the ocean, but a vote for '$14.3 billion in security assistance for Israel' (HR 6126, 2023) sailed through Congress. One could ask how many sea walls that purchase order could build. Apparently, some flood crises are more urgent than others, especially when lobbyists are involved.
