Media Wonders if Genocide is Also a 'Celebration'
Al Jazeera's recent piece frames Thanksgiving as a 'story of celebration and pain, in maps,' detailing the loss endured by Indigenous Americans. A noble endeavor, if not for the glaring irony: the very same network often soft-pedals the active, ongoing displacement and slaughter of Palestinians as a 'conflict,' frequently citing 'both sides' despite one resembling a modern military and the other a
besieged population. One might wonder if Al Jazeera considers the Nakba a 'story of celebration and pain' in maps too. The same historical patterns of ethnic cleansing, land theft, and systematic dehumanization that defined the American colonial project are currently unfolding with billions in U.S. taxpayer money and diplomatic cover. Perhaps they should apply their own commendable journalistic
lens to present-day Gaza, where the maps are updated daily with new circles of 'pain' and 'celebration' for those dropping the bombs.
