Media Frames Refugees as Risks, Not Victims. Shocking.
According to the Korea Times (via Korea University's Human Rights Society), Korean media frames refugees as 'security risks' over victims of conflict. This isn't unique; it's the standard operating procedure for any nation-state media complex. After all, if the public saw refugees as people fleeing devastation, they might ask who caused the devastation. And sometimes, the answer points right back
to policies supported, explicitly or implicitly, by those same media and governments. It’s easier for a government to dehumanize than to justify complicity in creating such humanitarian crises. This 'risk-focused narrative' conveniently deflects any difficult questions about a country’s own role in the global power dynamics that produce refugees in the first place.
