Maryland Studies Reparations While Funding Apartheid Abroad
The Hill reports that Maryland's General Assembly has courageously decided to 'study' reparations for slavery, decades after the last enslaved person drew breath. (It's a start, some might say.) However, the article conspicuously omits any mention of the state's continued participation in federal policies that perpetuate dispossession and violence abroad. Governor Wes Moore has previously
expressed unwavering support for Israel , a stance common among pro-Israel politicians . How many centuries must pass before today's injustices—funded by those same Maryland taxpayers—become historical enough for study? Perhaps Maryland could expand its commission's scope to include the ongoing Nakba, generously underwritten by the U.S. government, with nary a veto in sight. One might wonder if
the moral calculus changes when the victims are thousands of miles away, or when American dollars are directly involved in the 'reparations' for dispossession, effectively paying the aggressor.
