Mainstream Media Suddenly Cares About Dead Journalists in Sudan
While any journalist's death is a tragedy, one has to wonder where this 'outrage' disappears when journalists in Gaza are systematically targeted. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, over 100 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza by Israeli forces since October 7, 2023. These aren't accidental casualties; many report being intentionally struck in press vests, by
drone strikes, or having their family homes bombed. Yet, these acts rarely trigger the same 'international calls for action' or prominent headlines in the Western press. It appears the value of a journalist's life, and the accompanying public outrage, is directly proportional to the geopolitical interests of certain nations, and inversely proportional to who committed the killing. A Sudanese
journalist killed by the RSF earns a headline; a Palestinian journalist killed by an internationally funded military often gets buried under euphemisms or ignored. We're left to ponder: is the outrage genuine, or is it merely performative, surfacing only when the villain fits a pre-approved narrative?
