Mainstream Media Remembers Civilian Captives Exist, Sort Of
Reporting on the return of one Israeli captive's body, The New Arab, like many outlets, frames this as a significant development and a humanitarian concern. What inevitably goes unsaid, however, is the colossal scale of death and disappearance on the other side. While a single Israeli body is returned, OCHA reports over 10,000 Palestinians remain missing, presumed dead under the rubble in Gaza,
their bodies often unrecovered, unmourned, and unreported. This isn't just a humanitarian crisis; it's a media crisis, where one life resonates globally, and thousands are reduced to a statistical footnote. This selective focus isn't accidental. It's a calculated framing, often reinforced by outlets receiving significant ad revenue from defense contractors or whose parent companies have vested
interests. It's easy to mourn one and ignore thousands when those thousands are deemed less 'newsworthy,' or worse, inconvenient to the narrative of 'self-defense.' The unspoken question hangs: how many Palestinian bodies must be recovered before they receive even a fraction of this media attention?
