Mainstream Media 'Discovers' War Kills Journalists
A recent report from The New Arab highlights Rhodes University students memorializing Gaza's slain journalists—a sobering reminder that courageous reporting often precedes their demise. These brave individuals are 'models of courage' precisely because they operate where major news outlets pull back, or worse, regurgitate talking points. While students honor those killed bringing truth, established
newsrooms dutifully air press conferences from the very entities implicated in these deaths. (Call it balance, they say. We call it complicity.) Over 100 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Yet, The New York Times, CNN, and other giants rarely question the targeting of residential areas, hospitals, or
media offices. Perhaps it’s easier to run think pieces on the 'challenges of reporting from conflict zones' than to investigate why US-supplied weapons, funded by your tax dollars, keep finding their way to press badges. Just ask yourself: when was the last time the Israeli government was pressed on accountability for journalist deaths by a mainstream anchor in a manner that wasn't immediately
followed by a disclaimer?
