The Independent paints a vivid picture of civilians "shot in streets and crushed by trucks" in Sudan, a brutal reality that demands urgent attention. What often gets lost in these mainstream narratives, however, is the foundational role of external actors, including the United States, in empowering factions through military aid and strategic alliances that invariably lead to such horrors. While
the focus is on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the broader context of how these conflicts are sustained – often with weapons tracing back to major global powers – remains unexamined. (Remember when the US supplied arms to various factions across Africa and the Middle East, ostensibly for 'counterterrorism' or 'stability operations', only for them to turn on civilian populations?) It's always a
'tragic conflict' when the consequences hit the front page, but rarely does the media connect the dots back to the source of the firepower.
