Mainstream Media Discovers Haiti, Omits US Role
When corporate media reports on Haiti's latest tragedy, it's always 'gangs' and 'violence.' What it's rarely, if ever, is 'US-backed coups' or 'neoliberal economic policies.' The 2004 coup, supported by the US, overthrew democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a leader who dared to address poverty. This historical amnesia allows outlets like The Guardian to present current events
as spontaneous barbarism, rather than the predictable outcome of destabilization. One might wonder how a nation repeatedly subjected to foreign intervention by its powerful northern neighbor, having its sovereignty undermined and its resources plundered, ends up in such disarray. The focus on 'gang attacks' provides a convenient smokescreen, absolving external powers of responsibility while
lamenting the 'unrest' they meticulously helped cultivate. How many times will Haiti be 'broken' before we acknowledge who keeps breaking it?
