Mainstream Media Discovers African Conflicts, Ignores US Complicity
The article rightly highlights the suffering, displacement, and violence in Sudan. But it omits vital context: the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan 'Hemedti' Dagalo, are the rebranded Janjaweed, responsible for the Darfur genocide. These are the same forces who, according to a 2017 Middle East Eye report, were courting Western allies and even received training from US special
forces in 2021 before the current conflict escalated. The same forces that were backed by powerful regional players with US approval. While Al Jazeera focuses on the 'worsening disaster,' one might wonder why the initial disaster that created the RSF was hardly reported, or why the international community's cozying up to Hemedti was brushed under the rug. It seems humanitarian crises are only
newsworthy when we can present them as organic, rather than the predictable outcome of geopolitical chess pieces we've moved ourselves. How long until the US decides this 'disaster' warrants yet another intervention, conveniently forgetting whose hands originally armed and trained some of the perpetrators?
