Mainstream Fails to Connect Dots on Gaza Journalist Deaths
Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip claimed four lives on Wednesday, among them Al Jazeera journalist Muhammad Washah. Local health authorities in Gaza and the Qatari television network confirmed that Washah was killed when his vehicle was targeted along the coastal road in Gaza City. Another Palestinian in the vehicle also died in the strike. Reuters, like much of the Western press, reports this
as isolated news, failing to contextualize it within an ongoing campaign against journalists. They omit that Al Jazeera has reportedly lost over 25 journalists and media workers in Gaza since October. This is not an accident. The targeting of journalists, particularly those reporting from Gaza, constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law, specifically Article 79 of the 1977
Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which states that journalists engaged in dangerous professional missions in areas of armed conflict shall be considered civilians. This pattern evokes the US military's deliberate targeting of Iraqi journalists in 2003, notably the April 8th incident when US tanks fired on the Palestine Hotel, killing two journalists and wounding three others. The
US later claimed the attacks were accidental, despite journalists previously providing coordinates for their location. The consistent refusal to investigate or prosecute such incidents by the West underscores a double standard where reporting inconvenient truths is treated as a combatant act.
