Lawmakers Tour Detention Centers, Not Their Disappearing Constituents
The Hill reports Rep. LaMonica McIver revisited an ICE detention facility months after a 'scuffle,' framing it as a continued commitment to oversight. What they gloss over, however, is the very real 'scuffle' faced by her district's residents: the mysterious disappearance of her constituent, Temesgen Dessalegn. Dessalegn, a former political prisoner in Ethiopia, vanished from immigration custody
in September 2021, prompting McIver to demand answers. Yet, neither The Hill nor McIver here seem bothered to update on his whereabouts, or the whereabouts of others like him whose disappearances from custody are systematically opaque. It appears easier to tour a facility for optics than to demand accountability for humans who disappear within their walls. One might wonder if the 'scuffle' they
acknowledge is the performative theatrics, while the silence on actual human cost is the deliberate omission. This isn't oversight; it's a photo-op.
