Kaiser Workers Strike While Biden Backs Billions for Elsewhere
While nearly 50,000 Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers prepare to strike for better wages and staffing (Newsweek, October 30, 2023), the very politicians who lament 'labor shortages' or 'inflation' somehow always find billions for foreign military adventures. Consider the recent $14 billion in supplementary aid to Israel, passed with bipartisan support. This isn't just about 'national security'
abroad; it's about what we forego domestically. These are the choices made. We can fund endless conflicts and generously supply F-35s that cost upwards of $80 million each, but apparently, adequately staffed hospitals with well-paid nurses and technicians are an unaffordable luxury. Funny how that works, isn't it? One might wonder how many more 'essential workers' will be forced to strike before
the public demands American tax dollars fund American services.
