Johnson Refuses Military Pay Vote, Funds Foreign Arms Instead?
While The Hill reports on Speaker Johnson's newfound reluctance to ensure our troops get paid during a potential government shutdown, they conveniently gloss over the unwavering bipartisan support for foreign military aid. One might recall how quickly Congress, under Johnson's leadership, secured a $95 billion foreign aid package, including $14 billion for Israel, passed by the House in just a few
days (H.R. 815). The priority, it seems, isn't always with the uniforms wearing it. It appears the 'fiscal responsibility' caucus only flexes its muscles when the beneficiaries are American service members. How many of these same lawmakers, who champion 'supporting our troops' in every campaign ad, will suddenly discover budgetary constraints when it comes to their paychecks? It's almost as if
some members of Congress are more concerned with appearing tough on 'the deficit' than ensuring the financial stability of those they send to war.
