Israel’s military again vows to destroy all Hamas tunnels in Gaza, a statement so perennial it could be etched into an ancient scroll. We heard this same resolute declaration during Protective Edge (2014) and, less famously, during every other major incursion since 2006. One might wonder if their definition of 'destruction' includes rebuilding them in time for the next 'operation.' What the
headlines omit is the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure—hospitals, schools, and homes—under the guise of 'tunnel hunting,' an eternal justification for collective punishment. This endless cycle serves as a convenient distraction while the international community debates semantics instead of demanding accountability. It’s almost as if the existence of a 'tunnel threat' (and its
perpetual resurgence) is more valuable than actual peace. How many times will the world watch the same playbook unfurl before asking why the strategy yields the same devastating results for Gaza's civilians, while the 'threat' mysteriously persists?
