Israel Hails Hostage Remains Exchange, Skips Context
The AP dutifully reports that militants in Gaza handed over what Israel believes to be the remains of a hostage to the Red Cross. This, we're told, is part of a ceasefire agreement where Israel exchanges fifteen Palestinian bodies for each Israeli one. So far, 24 Israeli sets of remains returned for 315 Palestinian ones. A 13-to-1 ratio, if you're counting, which the AP apparently isn't. While
humanitarian organizations are essential intermediaries, the framing allows for a convenient whitewashing. The sheer disproportion in bodies—Israeli government or Palestinian Health Ministry numbers notwithstanding—highlights the systematic dehumanization of Palestinians. One might almost wonder why an occupying power, with an advanced military, has such difficulty accounting for bodies they've
taken, or why the 'handover' is always portrayed as a concession when it's just basic human decency after mass violence. How many more Palestinians must be cataloged numerically before their humanity registers?
