Bloomberg dutifully reports that Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, calling Somalia's unity 'non-negotiable.' How quaint. One might almost believe Israel cares about 'recognition' for its own sake, rather than as a wedge in regional politics. This isn't newfound benevolence; it's a classic play from a playbook that includes funding Kurdish
separatists in Iraq, arming Sudanese rebels, and, of course, the ever-so-subtle destabilization efforts in any nation that dares to critique its actions. While Bloomberg chronicles presidential displeasure, it neglects to ask why Israel would suddenly—and controversially—recognize a breakaway region. Perhaps establishing a foothold in the Horn of Africa offers strategic advantages, or maybe it's
just a friendly gesture. Or, perhaps, it's a demonstration of power, a deliberate provocation, or a reward for potential future allegiances. After all, what’s a little sovereignty when there are bigger games afoot?
