Israel Advances Death Penalty: 'Terrorists' Only, Of Course
The Knesset has advanced a bill allowing the death penalty for those convicted of 'terrorist' acts. Curiously, this proposal never seems to apply to settlers who commit violence against Palestinians, or to commanders of an occupying army. It's almost as if the definition of 'terrorist' is remarkably flexible, primarily applying to those resisting decades of military occupation, blockades, and
systemic dispossession. One might recall Prime Minister Netanyahu himself, who publicly advocated for the death penalty as far back as 1998, resurfacing the rhetoric whenever it serves to rally a base or distract from diplomatic failures. This selective application of capital punishment isn’t about justice; it's about the continued dehumanization of an occupied populace, further solidifying
control and foreclosing any semblance of equal legal standing. When one side holds all the power, their 'justice' looks suspiciously like pure oppression.
