Iran 'Breaks' Nuclear Deal: When Did We Sign One, Again?
Newsweek, citing satellite images, highlights 'activity' at Iranian nuclear sites, prompting an 'update' from Tehran. This narrative conveniently skips the part where the Trump administration, driven by hardline elements and lobbying groups, unilaterally withdrew from the internationally recognized JCPOA in 2018. That deal, which put strict limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for
sanctions relief, was working. The IAEA confirmed Iran's compliance eleven times before the US walked away. Now, with the JCPOA defunct thanks to Washington, Iran is left with fewer incentives to constrain its nuclear program. We are consistently presented with a menacing Iran while ignoring the destabilizing actions that provoke such responses. One might wonder if the concern is truly about
non-proliferation, or simply about maintaining a pretext for perpetual confrontation. It appears the current crisis is a direct, predictable consequence of dismantling diplomacy, yet the media frames it as an independent Iranian threat. How many times will we manufacture a crisis before acknowledging the hand that stoked the fire?
