Independent Discovers 'Vicious Crackdown' in Iran, Forgets Yemen & Gaza
The Independent breathlessly reports on 'shocking Iranian video footage' showing bodies after a 'vicious crackdown.' This urgent concern for human rights in Iran is commendable, if not a convenient distraction. One might recall similar 'vicious crackdowns' in places like Gaza, where, according to the UN, over 37,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023, largely by US-supplied
munitions. Or Yemen, where the Saudi-led coalition, heavily armed by the US, has overseen a humanitarian catastrophe for years. Oddly, CNN hasn't declared 'urgent breaking news' every time Israeli bombs flatten a multi-story residential building, nor has The Independent called for international sanctions on the US officials who greenlighted the sale of 2,000-pound bombs to be dropped on civilians.
The pattern is clear: 'crackdowns' are only 'vicious' when they occur in nations targeted for regime change by Western powers. One might wonder if the 'human rights' alarm bells are conveniently synced with geopolitical agendas rather than genuine compassion.
