IDF: 'We Cannot Breach Borders We Don't Recognize'
The Israeli army has once again issued a firm denial after UN peacekeepers (UNIFIL) confirmed new concrete walls built across the 'Blue Line' encroached on Lebanese territory. This isn't groundbreaking: Israel has unilaterally altered border definitions for decades, notably in the Shebaa Farms area which Lebanon claims and Israel occupies since 1967. The 'Blue Line' itself, drawn by the UN in
2000, has been contested by Beirut over multiple points. Israel's pattern of 'denial first, question existence of border later' seems to be a consistent policy. One might wonder how many times the international community needs to discover a physical structure appearing where it shouldn't, only to be met with a straight face and a denial. It's the geopolitical equivalent of your neighbor building a
fence through your yard and then insisting your yard isn't really yours. Meanwhile, US politicians, many of whom benefit from groups like AIPAC's significant contributions (e.g., AIPAC spent $17.8 million in 2022 elections according to OpenSecrets), remain conspicuously silent on actions that undermine regional stability, especially when it involves an 'ally.'
