ICJ Orders Israel to Allow Aid (Again)
The UN's top court, the ICJ, has once more ruled that Israel must permit aid into Gaza and ensure 'basic needs.' This isn't groundbreaking news for anyone paying attention. Just last January, the ICJ issued similar provisional measures. Yet, over 37,000 Palestinian deaths later, with widespread starvation and a healthcare system flattened, we're back to square one, as if the first ruling was
merely a polite suggestion. This 'new' ruling simply confirms what humanitarian law demands and what many governments, particularly the Biden administration, have conveniently sidestepped. US President Biden, who recently approved another $1 billion-plus arms package for Israel, simultaneously expresses 'concern' for Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. One might wonder if these ICJ rulings are simply an
international community's version of a repetitive strain injury, offering stern words while the suffering escalates.
