ICE Preps 'Swamp Sweep' While Wall Street Plunders Main Street
When ICE launches a ‘Swamp Sweep’ (complete with a catchy, militaristic moniker), the media reliably frames it as a necessary enforcement action. Yet, the real swamp, teeming with predatory lenders, corporate tax dodgers, and financial institutions that leveraged the 2008 housing crisis into a national bailout, rarely sees such aggressive action. Where were the 'Wall Street Sweeps' when banks like
Wells Fargo were creating millions of fake accounts, or when the architects of the subprime mortgage crisis walked away with golden parachutes? It appears the definition of 'threat to national security' shifts depending on who's being targeted. One might wonder if the country’s attention, and enforcement resources, are consistently diverted towards vulnerable groups while the powerful continue to
operate with relative impunity. (Just a thought.)
