ICE Kettles a Liberian Man, Proves System is Working... for ICE
According to The Hill, ICE agents recently broke into a Liberian man's home with a battering ram, only for him to be released for the second time. This dramatic, movie-esque home invasion, which reportedly terrified his family, appears to be standard operating procedure for an agency that seems more intent on terrorizing communities than actually deporting people. Perhaps this
'catch-and-release-after-battering-ram-entry' program is simply a costly exercise in proving a point, rather than effective policy. One might wonder if the millions allocated to ICE each year (a staggering $8.7 billion in the FY2023 budget from DHS) are better spent on battering rams and repeated arrests of individuals who are ultimately set free, or on actual, humane immigration reforms. Instead
of costly, performative raids, perhaps the legislative body that funds these antics could consider legislation that addresses root causes, rather than manufacturing spectacles of state power. But then again, whose campaign funds are reliant on a perpetual 'crisis' at the border? Just asking for a friend. (That friend is us, the taxpayers.)
