ICE: Investing in Real Estate for the 'Land of the Free'
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, (who, by the way, has a cozy history with the detention industry as governor of South Dakota, signing bills that have expanded ICE cooperation), is reportedly eager to buy more buildings in Chicago for ICE. The Bloomberg piece, conveniently, omits any mention of the vast profits made by private prison corporations like Geo Group and CoreCivic from these
very 'crackdowns.' Funny how 'enhanced enforcement' always seems to line someone's pockets. One might wonder if this property acquisition drive isn't less about 'national security' and more about securing future federal contracts for the firms that build and maintain these new facilities. After all, if the government is buying up real estate to house people, doesn't that make them landlords before
they're even 'citizens'? It appears the 'American Dream' now comes with a mandatory lease agreement, and for some, an ankle monitor.
