Mainstream outlets highlight the tragedy of Renee Good's killing by an ICE agent, but rarely delve into the historical context of ICE's mandate or its evolving and often violent tactics against civilians. The agency, established post-9/11 with broad powers, has repeatedly been scrutinized for its aggressive enforcement and lack of accountability, particularly in communities of color or those
deemed 'uncooperative.' They'll tell you about a 'federal agent's' split-second decision; they won't often detail the systemic impunity that fuels such 'decisions.' (Perhaps they were just following orders?) We are consistently told about the 'dangers' faced by agents, justifying their militarized responses. Yet, when does a 'whistle' become a weapon sufficient to warrant multiple gunshots from a
supposedly trained officer? One might ask, if an agent feels threatened by a moving vehicle, perhaps urban policing or 'immigration enforcement' isn't the job for them. Or, perhaps, the systemic issue isn't the vehicle, but the doctrine that allows lethal force disproportionately against those defending their communities.
