Newsweek reluctantly detailed the harrowing scene in Minnesota where ICE agents reportedly shot a man during a raid, then proceeded to throw tear gas into a home where a baby and other relatives were present. The agents appear to have been surprised when the individual they targeted wasn't immediately compliant, leading to standard operating procedure for state-sanctioned violence: escalate,
injure, then claim victimhood. (One might call it 'deterrence,' if one were reading a think tank report.) This isn't an isolated incident; it's a feature, not a bug, of an agency established under the PATRIOT Act to act with broad, often unchecked, authority. The public relations machine, however, will undoubtedly frame this as a 'challenging operation' against a 'dangerous suspect,' rather than
another instance of an unaccountable federal agency terrorizing a household, tear-gassing an infant, and shooting a man all over an immigration matter. Perhaps they're just training for the next 'border surge' in suburban America?
