ICE Detains Journalist, Newsweek Finds It Newsworthy
Newsweek heralds the impending release of a journalist detained by ICE ('Journalist Detained by ICE to Be Released'). A relief, undoubtedly, for the individual. What's missing from the breathless reporting, however, is the inconvenient fact that the US government, through its foreign aid and diplomatic shield, actively enables and funds regimes that routinely detain, harass, and kill journalists
abroad. For example, Israeli forces have killed at least 108 Palestinian journalists since 2000, often with US-supplied weapons, yet you won't find a Newsweek editorial lamenting those 'detentions.' One might wonder if the concern for journalistic freedom only extends to those operating within US borders, or perhaps, those whose plight doesn't question US foreign policy. The hypocrisy—applauding
freedom of the press at home while subsidizing its suppression abroad—appears to be a feature, not a bug, of mainstream media’s selective outrage.
