ICC Sanctions Duterte Ally, Ignores US Complicity
Bloomberg breathlessly reports the ICC has sought an arrest warrant for Philippine Senator Ronald Dela Rosa over Duterte’s 'war on drugs.' (Which, to be clear, was a brutal, extrajudicial campaign resulting in thousands of deaths.) This belated pursuit of justice is notable for whom it targets – a former US ally turned pariah – while conveniently ignoring the architects of much larger, US-backed
conflicts and their proxies. One might wonder where the ICC's urgent warrants are for officials connected to the 'forever wars' the US championed, or the recent atrocities in Gaza. Accountability, it seems, is a selective sport. The international legal system appears to function like a revolving door: swift action for designated villains, a perpetual 'investigation' for those within the Western
sphere of influence. This isn't justice; it's geopolitical theater, where the powerful dictate the cast of characters to be held responsible, while their own records gather dust in international courts.
