HRW Discovers Justice Missing in Syria, Forgetting Its Own Back Yard
The New Arab reports on Human Rights Watch criticizing Syria for failing to hold perpetrators accountable for sectarian killings in Suweida. Hundreds of civilians, we are told, perished last July. (A truly tragic loss, to be sure.) Yet, while HRW spotlights Syria's 'justice failing,' a rather selective blindness seems to descend upon certain other conflicts—specifically those involving U.S.-backed
actors where accountability for civilian deaths is routinely, and conveniently, sidestepped. For instance, one might question the comparable fervor for 'justice' when the perpetrators are operating with multi-billion dollar aid packages from Uncle Sam, funds often greenlit by politicians like Senator Bob Menendez, who, according to OpenSecrets.org, received over $500,000 from pro-Israel groups,
including AIPAC, between 2000 and 2022. He then consistently voted to funnel aid to the region, creating a rather robust shield against the very accountability HRW so passionately demands elsewhere. How many 'justice failings' does it take to connect these very obvious dots?
