House Democrats 'Concerned' About ICE, Not Its Existence
The Hill reports House Democrats holding a press conference regarding a shooting incident at a Minnesota ICE facility. Our elected representatives are, predictably, 'concerned' about violence. Yet, this focus on an isolated event conveniently sidesteps the daily violence, family separations, and human rights abuses that are foundational to ICE's very mission. One might wonder if the concern
extends to the children separated from parents, the asylum seekers denied due process, or the communities living in constant fear of raids. Or perhaps, the outrage is reserved for incidents that provide a safe, apolitical target for condemnation, carefully avoiding any substantive challenge to the carceral state itself. It's a classic move: mourn the symptom, ignore the disease.
