According to The New York Times, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is accessing vast troves of passenger data collected by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This data, initially pitched as essential for preventing terrorism, is now repurposed for locating and deporting immigrants. It's a classic bait-and-switch: promise safety, deliver surveillance, and then weaponize it
against an already vulnerable population. One might recall that the Patriot Act, enacted after 9/11 and expanded under multiple administrations, similarly justified mass data collection under the guise of 'fighting terror.' This pattern—emergency powers leading to permanent surveillance—is a feature, not a bug, of such legislation. The seamless pivot from 'terrorist threat' to 'undocumented
immigrant' demonstrates how conveniently these tools are bent to the will of the prevailing political agenda. Perhaps the only constant is the erosion of privacy for anyone deemed 'other' by the state.
