Homeland Security Declares Haiti 'Safe' for Returnees, Ignores U.S. Legacy
The official line is that conditions in Haiti have improved. This, despite Al Jazeera's own report acknowledging 'widespread gang violence.' But let’s not pretend Washington’s assessment of Haiti is ever about Haitian well-being. From orchestrating coups against democratically elected leaders like Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004 (with U.S. troops on the ground) to propping up dictators, the U.S.
has repeatedly ensured Haiti remains a basket case, ripe for exploitation and perpetual crisis. It's a convenient amnesia, really. The same administrations that actively destabilize nations then declare them 'safe' for deportees, absolving themselves of any responsibility for the chaos they helped create. One might wonder if 'safe' in D.C. geopolitical speak simply means 'no longer useful to us,
so send them back to the mess we made.'
