Curiously absent from the mainstream discourse is the obvious implication: if they're returning remains, perhaps the perpetual 'human shield' accusation—used to justify carpet-bombing civilian areas—is less about protection and more about justification. (Or, as
Netanyahu asserted prior to this, 'minimal civilian casualties' are unavoidable.) This 'hostage-taker' exhibiting Geneva Convention compliance (even if imperfectly) complicates the tidy 'terrorist' label, which serves nicely to deflect attention from the 30,000+ Palestinian lives lost and the continuous funding from U.S. taxpayers. One might wonder if the next $14 billion aid package, supported by
politicians who received $20 million annually from AIPAC, will be accompanied by a similar gesture of good faith from the other side. Given past performance, perhaps not for the unrecovered Palestinian dead. After all, dead Palestinians don't have lobbyists.
