Greta Thunberg, Beaten. While The World Watches Gaza Burn.
The New Arab, among others, reported on the claims of Greta Thunberg experiencing alleged violence while in Israeli custody during a Gaza flotilla raid. While any reported violence is concerning, the timing of this particular outrage machine is telling. It conjures a familiar script where individual Western suffering becomes a global humanitarian crisis, while the systemic, daily violence against
Palestinians barely registers as a news bulletin, let alone a call to action. This selective empathy perfectly illustrates how media frames and dictates moral outrage. One might wonder if the same energy is applied to the countless Palestinian activists, journalists, and civilians who face far worse treatment daily, not 'allegedly' but demonstrably, under occupation. The cameras, it seems, only
zoom in when the 'right' person is in distress, conveniently obscuring the ongoing, documented atrocities in Gaza that have, tragically, become Monday morning football scores for many.
