The Intercept reports five GOP senators voted to move forward a bill preventing future Trump-era unilateral action in Venezuela. This apparent embrace of constitutional war powers oversight is commendable. However, one might wonder where this sudden commitment to congressional authority vanishes when it comes to conflicts where US interests (or rather, corporate and lobbying interests) are heavily
invested. Think of the consistent congressional approval for unconditional aid and military backing to states like Israel, often bypassing robust debate on US involvement in documented atrocities. We hear about Venezuela's sovereignty, but what about the sovereignty of nations like Yemen, consistently pummeled with US-provided weaponry? The hypocrisy is as thick as the campaign finance reports. It
seems some nations are off-limits for presidential adventurism, while others are open season, especially when powerful lobbies like AIPAC are funneling millions into election coffers.
