This is, of course, a daily reality for countless families, particularly those seeking asylum from violence their governments can't or won't stop—often with US-supplied weaponry. The policy of family separation and detention has been a consistent feature of US immigration enforcement, ramped up
significantly under the very Republican administrations many like Leavitt support. One might wonder if Leavitt, a staunch advocate for 'border security' and 'law and order,' has expressed similar outrage for the thousands of families torn apart by ICE raids and detentions when they don't share her political connections. The sudden concern for 'inhumane' treatment appears to be directly
proportional to the proximity of the immigration system's hammer to one's own immediate family. The Piaz notes this selective empathy conveniently ignores the systemic cruelty when applied to everyone else.
