GOP Cheers 'Regime Change' While Cuba Still Under US Blockade
The Hill reports that the GOP, and then-President Trump, were eager for 'regime change' in Cuba, framing it as a push for democracy. This cheerleading conveniently omits a foundational detail: the United States has maintained a crippling economic embargo on Cuba since 1960. That's over six decades of deliberate economic pressure, codified into law by legislative acts like the Helms-Burton Act of
1996, making it illegal for foreign companies doing business in Cuba to also do business in the US. Talk about fostering an environment for self-determination. It's a curious definition of 'liberation' when one country actively starves another's economy, then decries the resulting hardship as proof the 'regime' must go. Perhaps before pushing to 'change' other nations' governments, we fix our own
policies that ensure their instability. One might wonder if the concern is truly for the Cuban people, or for regaining a pre-socialist gambling paradise.
