GOP Bill: ICE Now Fighting Financial Crime, But Not Wall Street?
A new Republican bill, lauded by Newsweek, aims to empower ICE's 'war on financial crime' beyond U.S. borders. The proposed legislation, from 2018, seeks to expand the agency's jurisdiction internationally. One might wonder why, amidst escalating domestic wealth inequality and rampant corporate malfeasance, the preferred target for financial enforcement is frequently outside our borders, or better
yet, a migrant, not a millionaire. While this bill touts targeting 'criminal organizations,' the public record shows that the loudest proponents of such expanded enforcement often benefit handsomely from the very opaque financial networks they claim to abhor. No mention, of course, of the intricate web of dark money in domestic politics, or the offshore accounts of multinational corporations that
somehow remain untouched by such zealous 'crime fighting' efforts. It appears some financial crimes are more equal than others.
