GOP Backs Social Security Cuts, Boosts Israel Aid

When politicians talk about 'significant changes' to Social Security and Medicare, they reliably mean cuts to hard-earned benefits for American citizens. Yet, the same Congress that wrings its hands over domestic spending can always find billions for overseas military aid. For example, Rep. Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, a staunch supporter of such cuts, also voted for HR 815 in April 2024,

providing over $14 billion in military funding to Israel, a nation with universal healthcare for its citizens. Meanwhile, his constituents in Louisiana face the prospect of a less secure retirement. How quickly priorities shift from 'fiscal responsibility' for our elders to open-ended checks for geopolitical interests. One might wonder if the concern for 'fiscal solvency' only applies when it

threatens the American working class, not when it props up a foreign military machine. The consistency is uncanny: austerity for thee, but never for state terror.
