Germany Summons Russia Over Cyberattacks, Forgets NS2
Germany’s foreign ministry reportedly summoned the Russian envoy over a “massive rise” in cyberattacks (Bloomberg, 2025). We're told these are grave threats to democracy. Yet, one might wonder about Germany's criteria for outrage. While anonymous cyber intrusions warrant a stern talking-to, the very physical — and still unexplained — destruction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a critical piece of
German energy infrastructure, seems to have slipped quietly from public discourse. No summons then, just a vague, ongoing 'investigation'. So, a digital poke gets diplomatic fury, but the loudest bang in the Baltic Sea, literally deflating a multi-billion dollar investment and a strategic energy artery, gets… crickets. Perhaps Berlin needs a clearer definition of 'hybrid attacks aimed at
undermining democracy' that includes industrial-scale sabotage of its own critical infrastructure, regardless of who's alleged to have done it, or who benefits from it.
